Establishing Brand identity for Startup

Recently I have been doing a deep dive in researching startup mentality and core pillars of early growth. And now I have come to question about brand identity. So my question is - how important for your startup it was to establish brand/product identity and have it documented?

I think -- and as a designer it can be funny -- that on the early stage it's not mandatory.
Next, when you start growing, you need some documentation. 90% of the articles about your startup will include a logo / screen of your app or product, it become important to keep control on what other publish about you. They won't always ask for a logo or anything else, they will just pick it alone, on your website... on your documented page.
