I have been in a book club since 2013. We were looking to motivate each other to read more fiction and have thoughtful conversations like we did back in high school. I think the twist to my book club is that we meet weekly, but instead of reading the whole book we assign between 80-120 pages per week. It has forced us to do closer readings of the books. It has greatly improved my comprehension and appreciation for notoriously "tough" books. It's a big time commitment, but it has been a great way to have a weekly ritual with my friends. Before the pandemic, we usually talked and then had dinner together. Now we do a zoom.

@product_at_producthunt That sounds fun. How do you pick what books to read? Do you read other books on the side? I've always dabbled with the idea of joining one but feared it might too narrowing as a lot of the ones I've seen focus on very specific genres and won't have the time to venture outside of that.

@cristinaibunea The rules we've worked out for book selection are that the books have to be fiction, anyone who plans to participate can nominate, and only people who finished the last book can vote. Then we use an over-complicated rank choice voting system one of my friends found (https://civs1.civs.us/) 🙃. I have N of 1, but it seems like the most important thing for us has been finding people that want to have similar conversation/analysis, the content of the books has mattered less since it lets us explore more. I used to read more on the side, but having 1 year old has eaten into a lot of that lazy weekend time I'd usually read.

It's an interesting space. I'm part of the team at hardcover.app and we're actually working on book clubs. We're thinking of doing them async, so people don't have to read a book at the same time. And make it more about reading accountability. Still figuring it out, but there's definitely something to be achieved there. I know fable.co is a very nice platform for book clubs, and I like their approach. But I've never been able to get into it.
