What are your thoughts on a development bounty program?

I'm putting together a new team of remote student developers and I'd like to keep my cost manageable by introducing a bounty on each development item. I think they might be motivated to pickup more tasks because they get paid paid as they deliver each task instead of paying them a per hour fee. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this and if you have any experience in something like this.
