What's the best home lighting/automation platform?

I've seen/tried a couple systems for controlling my lights etc smart-home style, but they had lousy software and hardware UX, bugs, or are too expensive to get started.

SmartThings

Connects multiple services (hue, z-wave, zigbee, http), decent app with automation and rules, introduced local support so that commands don't necessarily have to go to "the cloud" if they don't have to which speeds things up, well priced, lots of Samsung integrations because of their acquisition.

For smart home automation, I use IFTTT! It works pretty well.

Belkin WeMo Switch

While WeMo may still not be perfect, the ability to plug whatever appliance I want into it and turn it into a smart device is amazing. Syncs with IFTTT, Google Assistant, Alexa, etc too!
