Slack

Be less busy. Real-time messaging, archiving & search.

Ellen Kruijzen- Nightlife Evangelist at Loop
With our startup, we're a team of 3 people who often remote from home. Some tips that have helped us as a team: - Always set a status (at home, sick, commuting) so you know where everyone is + it also helps to know if they're able to answer quickly. - Make sure to use different channels (we use marketing, website, fulfilment, product, ...) - Work with me… See more

Slack is simple, extremely fast and reliable. I use it every day to communicate with my team. Before it we were using Hipchat (Atlassian product) ... and there is no comparison. Slack wins. Use it with Trello and you have all the basic tools you need to manage/talk/discuss the project with your team
Mike Coutermarsh- Code @ GitHub
Maybe the obvious answer. But I think Slack's the best option here. For small projects I like it in coordination with Trello. Makes communication/keeping on the same page very easy.

Asana

The task management tool, completely redesigned

Ahmed- iOS/macOS Engineer. Founder of Flawless
Asana is really nice after big redesign. We use it daily to keep track of all tasks. Easy to use tasks and subtasks system, ability to upload files directly to the task and also they have comments under each task/subtask for discussion. If you need something for development purposes only, I thing there are better solutions, but for high level roadmap plann… See more

I really love Asana! It's great for both collaborating with team members and personal use. I also love the fact that it implements the list, Trello board, and calendar UI formats. Trello is too lightweight IMO. Asana addresses all of the features you want - discussing issues via comments, adding screenshots, and voting on particular items via "hearting."
Joshua Ho- Founder, Referral Rock
Using the "Inbox" feature is key, as is turning off email notifications (gets a little noisy with a lot of use. We train our team to live by the "Inbox" and use @ replies there and comments on tasks/projects to keep the mass interruptions in slack. Slack has it's place and we love that too, but we basically use Asana and Slack for 90% of all team communica… See more

Flow

Beautiful team chat with tightly integrated task management

James Welch- CEO @ innovationcompany.co.uk
I recently tried over eighty (yes,80+) project/task managers suitable for small businesses, and this one became the chosen app we now use (team of 7). It was a close thing between Flow and ProofHub, but the timeline view of Flow was the thing that swung us to using it. It could have been either piece of software, but Flow just won. Good things: Repeating ta… See more

I like the task model of Flow, but I don't use the chat side.
