f.lux

Adjusts your computer's display to adapt to the time of day

Ryan Hoover- Founder, Product Hunt
f.lux is delightful. This app dims your computer monitor later in the day when the sun sets to relieve eye strain. 🌞🌚

My eyes are so thankful for f.lux πŸ™
Kunal Bhatia- Co-founder & Design Lead @SlidesUp
Love f.lux reminders. It doesn't make your computer go to sleep, but in addition to reducing blue light, it tells you "You are waking up in 9 hours". After I see "You are waking up in 3 hours", I know I should really shut down!

Millions of years ago people lived in sync with nature. Yes, they were dying somehow every day from fever, but life was good, sort of. When we lived in caves we didn't have light bulbs and this somehow helped our circadian clocks to stay on track with the natural day and night cycles of the Sun.

The interesting thing about monitors is that they should be like the Sun. The second interesting thing about monitors is that they should be like a lightbulb. They failed at both of this... Monitors are like the Sun. They emit all colors of the rainbow but as you can guess it's probably not so normal to look at the Sun at night.

Like many others I'd been using f.lux, the popular anti-insomnia blue light filter app, to reduce computer vision syndrome (CVS) caused by blue light. f.lux had been the best in its superior approach to filtering blue light. Iris is the novel blue light filter app designed specifically to reduce computer eye strain.
Iristech
F.lux is a popular blue light reduction program, but I personally hated several things about this program. When I started to have eye problems in 2015 I wanted to be able to manually control the blue light of my screen.

Shady for Mac

Pull a virtual shade over your screen, rest your eyes

porterbayne- Cofounder/CEO, Antenna
I use an external monitor all of the time, but they're super bright, and a super-pain to adjust. Shady is a light, free-as-in-beer program that casts an overlay on your screen and makes it super simple to adjust brightness up and down. Saves my eyes, all day long.
