My hypotheses on how Skydio delivered a deep-tech consumer product in an once over-hyped and now extremely crowded consumer drone space. Skydio recently announced R1, a fully autonomous consumer drone that can track a person. While person tracking in drone is not new, R1 is said to be way above its competition.

It's 2035, the Second American Civil War has been won by the other side, and you find yourself in a heap of trouble with Attorney General Logan Paul. (The future is very troubling.) He has dispatched an all-seeing eye-in-the-sky to tail you, an agile flying machine equipped with 13 cameras and a top speed of 25 miles per hour.

Skydio's R1 drone can be flown without expertise and doesn't even come with a controller. It uses artificial intelligence, specifically computer vision algorithms, to identify its surroundings, avoid obstacles, and follow its subjects with 4K video recording. The device goes on sale today for $2,499 and it ships in a few weeks.

Can't decide between 360 shots or the pricier but more immersive 3D? The Kandao QooCam is a $399 camera that twists to swap between 4K 360 and 3D 180. Using depth mapping, that 180 view can also shoot first and focus later while both modes can capture stabilized video stitched in real time.
