Best app for news/journalism in my opinion. The interface is a lot cleaner and quicker if you just want curated news, and Google can pull from every media source known to man when you're looking for the latest news on a specific topic. So it covers every use case/scenario.

That time is apparently now, as the new Google News has gone live on iOS this afternoon and replaced the old Google Play Newsstand app.
