Amazon said on Friday it was buying Whole Foods in a blockbuster deal for $13.7 billion. It's not clear yet what Amazon plans to do with the upscale grocer, but it has big plans for the future of grocery stores. The online retail giant revealed a concept for a physical store in a video in December.
For the past year, Amazon employees have been test driving Amazon Go, an experimental convenience store in downtown Seattle. The idea is to let consumers walk in, pick up items and then pay for them without ever standing in line at a cashier.
Called Amazon Go, the new store eliminates checkout lines and allows customers to pay for any items bought via their smartphones.
Amazon this morning unveiled its first convenience store, a high-tech retail location called "Amazon Go," currently in a private beta testing in Seattle and scheduled to open to the public early next year. The big selling point: no check-out lines. The company isn't offering media previews or answering questions about precisely how it works.
