I'm sure it's parked around here somewhere ...
It's been barely two weeks since SpaceX successfully launched the first Falcon Heavy into orbit, and many are curious as to where it and its unconventional passenger are right now. Instead of sending something boring as the Heavy's first payload, SpaceX CEO and founder Elon Musk launched his own Tesla Roadster.
Elon Musk's Starman, the mannequin driver of the Tesla Roadster SpaceX launched aboard its Falcon Heavy rocket, is taking a trip around our solar system, in a large elliptical orbit that will bring him relatively close to Mars, the Sun and other heavenly bodies.
Image: SpaceX/Flickr Last Tuesday, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk made history when he launched the Falcon Heavy, the most powerful rocket since the Saturn V took Apollo astronauts to the moon. The Heavy's payload was Musk's personal Tesla roadster, a $100,000 luxury car made by one of Musk's other companies.
As of this writing, the car is about 2.1 million miles away from Earth and hurtling toward Mars at about 43,145MPH (6,755MPH away from Earth). It won't actually orbit Mars or venture into the Asteroid Belt, as Musk suggested -- if it keeps on its current trajectory, it should venture just past Mars before being pulled back toward the center of the system.
