In the future, there will be a social network for everything.
But seriously, I'm curious about these niche/focused apps. The big challenge (imho) is long-term engagement. Will mom's use this after their child is born? Any mom's want to weigh in?
There was a HUGE thread on Secret between techie almost-moms about how bad parenting forums are, and how much of a need there is for innovation in this space.
@rrhoover I'm a huge fan of niche social networks for highly engaged audiences. For instance, I really like what Backplane was doing, but they hadn't made the transition to mobile like a company such as Amino is trying to do.
Preggie seems to have the ability to capture a woman's attention leading up to pregnancy, during pregnancy, and as a new mother. And from a business perspective, this is a very easily monetizable demographic for advertisers and for on-site commerce.
@rrhoover great point. They could just add a funnel after the mom's due date into the "Social Network for New Moms" app. Would imagine if they're engaged with the first app they'd use the next one
Eventually point them towards the "Social Network for Moms with a crazy teenager" and finally the "Social Network for Moms with kids that moved back into my basement"
@ashbhoopathy - great point! I'm curious where the inspiration for Preggie came from, @soy_andrey.
And again, congrats, Ash. Can't wait to see the little Bhoopathy designing products. :)
@rrhoover I imagine it would expand as it goes, much like Diapers.com did, or at least up-sell users to other paid services, like PlentyofFish famously did for dating.
Once a site knows your due date, there's 18 years of powerful targeted ads coming your way :) (And helpful product/community offerings)
